Why we love having apprentices at Owben

Over the years we’ve had 16 apprentices, and each one has been valuable to our business.

Taking on an apprentice is a fantastic way to invest in the future of your business, as you’re training the next generation of talent in the skills your organisation needs.

And the benefits aren’t just long-term, either. In fact, 86% of employers said apprenticeships developed skills relevant to their organisation and 78% reported improved productivity, according to statistics from the Government Apprenticeships scheme. That’s certainly been our experience, too.

Another benefit we’ve found is that around 70% of our apprentices stay on with us once their apprenticeship comes to an end. This has been an essential ingredient to our success, as it’s helped protect us from the UK skills shortage.

We also find that through our apprenticeship scheme we’re able to tailor the team’s skills to suit the needs of the business.

What do we look for in an apprentice?

To us, it is important that our apprentices:

  • are flexible in their approach to work
  • have strong communication skills
  • can work both independently and as part of the team
  • are able to solve problems efficiently.
 

Opportunities for our apprentices

We offer all our apprentices a permanent placement in their specialist field within Owben. From here, our apprentices can progress through the ranks into more senior positions – and many have.

We also offer our apprentices the opportunity to undertake additional training to get more experience under their belt and become even more qualified to deliver great work.

Our apprenticeship story

Every one of the apprentices we’ve taken on over the years became qualified in electrical engineering, mechanical fabrication, or welding. Each one has then gone on to progress within our business or the industry.

Our biggest apprenticeship success story to date is Tony Joice, our Electrical Supervisor. Tony started his Owben career back in 2013 as an apprentice electrician. Through hard work and dedication, he’s been been able to quickly progress into his current role where he is responsible for the electrical personnel on-site.
